How to Make Skewers at Home

Today I will be sharing two recipes for skewers, one for chicken and one for steak. And you can serve these dishes with Papa Rellana, Camarones Al Ajilo or you can have Pina Colada Flan.


Both recipes are easy to make and delicious to eat. If you are planning to host or go to a party then these dishes are sure to please your friends and family.

So what are we waiting for let’s start by looking at how to make chicken skewers at home. I usually make them in the oven so today I will be sharing the easy way to make the skewers in the oven.

How to Cook Chicken Skewers in Oven

Chicken skewers are easy to make and need very less time to marinade.

Prep Time 10 minutes

Cook Time 20 minutes

Total Time 30 minutes


1 kg Chicken thighs Boneless and skinless and cut lengthways

For the marination

150 g of natural yogurt

2 tablespoons of paprika

2 tablespoons of cumin

0.5 tablespoons of cinnamon

0.5 tablespoons of dried chili flakes

2 tablespoons of garlic granules (or 3 cloves of fresh garlic)

1 Lemon Zest and juice

Salt and freshly ground pepper


Step #1

In a large bowl mix all the ingredients for marination.

Step #2

Add the chicken to the marinade and keep it to rest for 30 minutes or overnight. Cover the bowl and put it inside the refrigerator.

Step #3

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

Thread the chicken into the skewers.

Now it’s to time to bake the chicken for 20 minutes until it turns golden in color.

Bonus Tips

  • I generally use thighs but you can use chicken breasts to make this dish as well.
  • The chicken skewers are tasty to have when they are cold and you can have them with this delicious yellow rice dish.

How to Cook Steak Skewers

Although the steak takes a bit more time to marinade the taste is out of this world. So let’s find out the easiest way to make steak skewers at home.

Prep Time 25 minutes

Cook Time 10 minutes

Total Time 3 hours 35 minutes


For Marination

¼  cup of olive oil

¼  cup of soy sauce

1½ tablespoons of fresh lemon juice

1½  tablespoons of red wine vinegar

2½  tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon of honey

2 tablespoons of Dijon

1 tablespoon of minced garlic

1 tablespoon of freshly ground black pepper

For Steak skewer

1¾ lbs of sirloin steak (look for thicker steaks), cut them into cube-size pieces.

8 oz button or cremini mushrooms, halved (unless small, keep whole)

3 bell peppers (1 red, 1 green, 1 yellow) cut into 1 1/4-inch piece

1 large red onion diced into chunks (about 1 1/4-inch)

1 tablespoon of olive oil, plus more for brushing grill grates

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

½  tablespoon of garlic powder

10 wooden skewer sticks soaked in water for at least 30 minutes


Step #1

In a bowl mix all the marination ingredients.

Step #2

Put the steaks with the marination and ensure all the meat is soaked in the liquid.

Step #3

Wrap the bowl with a plastic wrapper and put it in the refrigerator for at least 3 to 4 hours.

Step #4

Preheat the grill to a balmy 425 degrees.

Step #5

On a baking sheet lined with foil then set it aside.

Step #6

Thread the steak and the veggies in the skewers and place them on the baking sheet.

Step #7

Put in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes depending on the level of doneness. Keep a close eye when the 10 minutes marker is passed so that you don’t burn the steak.

Bonus Tips

  • When baking, always keep a close eye so the meat doesn’t burn.
  • When making skewers cut the steaks into cube sizes.
  • You can also use other veggies like cherry tomatoes or potatoes.

Yes, you can grill the steak. On medium-high heat, about 425 degrees put the 

Preheat a grill over medium-high heat to about 425 degrees (partway through preheating clean grill grates if they aren’t already clean). Brush grill grates lightly with oil. Place kebabs on grill and grill until the center of steak registers about 140 – 145 degrees for medium doneness, turning kebabs occasionally, about 8 – 9 minutes. Serve warm.

Can I Use a Different Cut of Steak?

I recommend sticking with top sirloin or New York Strip since it’s leaner than some other steaks leaving you with nice uniform cubes and not a lot of excess fat. It has great flavor and comes out tender when marinated and properly cooked.
